BATTLE CREEK (WKZO AM/FM) — The Binder Park Zoo is doing what it can to save endangered species by encouraging certain animals to breed and they were wildly successful this week when Ghost, their rare African painted dog gave birth to a litter of eleven pups.
The zoo is closed this time of the year, and the family has been given privacy and the opportunity to grow and bond without unnecessary human intervention.
The African painted dog is currently listed as Endangered by both the International Union for Conservation of Nature and the U.S Fish and Wildlife Service.
There are estimated to be less than 5,000 worldwide. There are 11 more today.
