PAW PAW (WKZO AM/FM) — The American Civil Liberties Union is urging the Walmart in Paw Paw to end the sale of sports wear and other items bearing the Redskins logo.
They sent a letter to Walmart’s CEO Wednesday saying the mascot is an “offensive racial slur” and that the company should terminate sales of Redskins gear.
They claim the high school mascot is promoting a hostile racial environment in the school district, and site reports on half-a-dozen incidents obtained through the “Freedom of Information Act.”
Attorney Mark Fancher says threats from supporters of the Redskin mascot have created an atmosphere of intimidation in the adult community.
Apparently the local Walmart had already removed the merchandise temporarily because of a complaint. Fancher says they should never bring it back.
The mascot debate has been a major controversy in the last couple of years in Paw Paw.
In fact the debate to remove the mascot name will be discussed again during school board elections in November.
