KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A man accused of being the perpetrator in a shooting case that occurred last October is expected to stand trial, according to a report from MLive Monday.
Previously, in October, officers with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) were dispatched to the 1600 block of North Church Street near West Prouty Street on a report of shots fired.
Upon arrival, officers discovered a 54-year-old Kalamazoo resident, Robert Earl Johnson, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Live-saving efforts were attempted, but he was later pronounced dead.
According to reports, the suspected shooter, 23-year-old Branden Charles Herrera, is accused of firing rounds from a moving vehicle, one of which entered Johnson’s home and struck him while he was asleep. Herrera was apprehended two days after the shooting.
Officials say that they don’t believe Johnson was an actual target in the incident.
Reports also say that Herrera waived his right to a preliminary hearing on Monday. He is currently being held without bond, and is expected to face nine felony counts relating to murder and illegal weapons charges.
