KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety and Kalamazoo Township Fire Department along with Comstock Firefighters acted quickly to keep a fire from spreading through an apartment complex.
Firefighters responded to the incident on Saturday at 10:29 a.m. and found heavy smoke and flames coming from a second story window at Carriage Green Apartments at the 4500 block of West Main Street.
Officials report the blaze was kept to one unit and brought under control in 30 minutes, resulting in no injuries.
The Red Cross responded to the scene to provide assistance to the occupants of eleven apartments that were displaced because of water and smoke damage to the building.
The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety’s Fire Marshal’s office investigated the fire and determined that a resident had left a heated pan with oil unattended, which resulted in the oil catching fire and extending throughout the kitchen.
The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety would like to remind you, when cooking, not to leave the kitchen unattended. Statistics show that most fires that occur during the day start in the kitchen.
