KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Authorities are increasing safety measures at Kalamazoo Public Schools after a series of online threats.
School officials say more social media threats were found Monday night targeting Loy Norrix and Kalamazoo Central high schools and Linden Grove Middle School, but the schools will remain open Tuesday.
Kalamazoo Public Safety officers and Township Police do not believe the threats are credible.
Bomb-detecting dogs will sweep the buildings, campus safety and administrators will use metal detector wands as students enter the schools, and there will be an increased police presence throughout the district.
They say any students found responsible for the threat will face both legal and school consequences.
In a statement the school wrote:
“All local law enforcement agencies have been diligently investigating each threat with the intent ofensuring the safety of Kalamazoo Public Schools students and employees and ofholding those responsible accountable for this disruption…The district is committed to the safety of its students and will continue to keep the community informed.”
Administrators say parents who wish to keep their children home Tuesday should contact the school for an excused absence.
This comes after several Portage schools were also closed Tuesday due to threats.
School officials received information regarding a threat to harm students at Portage Northern High School and as a precaution the entire northern campus was closed Tuesday. This includes the High School, North Middle School, Community High and Curious Kids childcare on the Milham campus.
