PARCHMENT, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A Kalamazoo County woman is being formally charged after repeatedly kicking a dog outside a home in Parchment.
On Wednesday 33-year-old Sara Beth Stafford was arraigned on felony home invasion, misdemeanor aggravated assault, and a misdemeanor animal cruelty charge for the incident that occurred on Monday at a home in the 400 block of Keyes Drive.
Surveillance footage showed Stafford kicking the family’s small dog multiple times. She then went inside the home and assaulted a woman, who WOOD-TV says was one of her best friends.
The victim came to the door when she heard the dog yelping and she says that’s when Stafford punched her repeatedly, causing her to lose consciousness.
If convicted, the home invasion charge could be up to 20 years in prison and/or a $5,000 fine, the aggravated assault misdemeanor is up to 1 year and/or a $1,000 fine, and the animal cruelty misdemeanor is up to 93 days in jail and/or $1,000 fine.
The dog suffered some internal bruising but is expected to be fine.
Stafford is now in the Kalamazoo County Jail on a $50,000 cash or surety bond.
