KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo City Officials say they are not going to get much help from the state or the Federal Government following last month’s flooding. There just wasn’t enough damage.
Right now they say the county estimates damage at about $2 to 3-million, a sizable amount but, the city would have to get in line behind tornado damage in the Midwest, hurricane damage in Texas and Florida, or wildfire destruction out west.
Deputy City Manager Jeff Chamberlain says they want flood victims to call 211 to get registered and when help is available for them, they will come calling.
The City of Kalamazoo is also working with the Township and a list of other human service, health, housing and other agencies to address the problems caused by flooding.
That was the purpose of a special town hall meeting on the flooding at City Hall Wednesday night.
But City Hall’s Rebekah Kik says they have knocked on the doors of over 583 properties in the flood zones and have only heard back from less than 100 homes.
She says some homeowners may be able to get new furnaces and water heaters for free if they really need it and can’t afford it themselves.
