MACKINAC ISLAND, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer is increasing the number of housing units she wants built in the state.
At the 2024 Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce Mackinac Policy Conference on Mackinac Island Wednesday yesterday, she said she wants 115,000 new housing units by September 2026, which she says is “ambitious, it’s achievable, and it’s absolutely necessary.”
Whitmer had called for having 75,000 housing units developed from 2021 to September 2025. The governor says the state’s housing supply is not where it needs to be due to a decade-long slowdown in construction after the 2008 recession and a lack of state investment.
