KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – If you thought you had finally figured out how to avoid all the construction zones in Kalamazoo, think again. More orange cones could be in your future.
Construction begins next month on Michikal Street, the first project in a massive “Streets for All” plan to return two-way traffic to downtown.
City commissioners approved the $1.9-million contract this week.
Public Works director Jim Baker says step one is repaving that connector the links Kalamazoo Avenue with Michigan and Stadium, redesigning the intersections.
He says it may be a while before they can switch many of the early projects to two-way, because they all connect.
Baker says this first project will continue through November, and then resume with phase two next year.
He says it will take them until 2028, maybe longer to do all the work.
Phase two will also provide a new path for Arcadia Creek downtown. So instead of one season of detours around Michikal, we can expect two.
