KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Overshadowed by all the ads and mailers for local Republican and Democratic primary candidates are two millage requests on the ballot of every voter in Kalamazoo County, who will wrap up voting on Tuesday.
Metro Transit is requesting renewal of their fraction of a mill to fund countywide transportation services.
Metro Transit director Sean McBride says their ridership continues to grow as the cost of owning a car continues to rise and more people rely on their system for basic transportation to work, school and other essential needs.
“This millage is a renewal of an existing millage, it’s actually going up a little bit to .36 mills. It funds our Metro Connect and Metro Share service and it’s going to be for seven years.”
He says while the request is a bit higher this time, it’s actually lower than their original request for 4/10’s of a mill in 2009.
“This millage is essential for our funding. We use these funds to leverage our federal and state dollars and provide the robust service to the community.”
He says a yes vote would cost the typical homeowner about $36 a year, most of which they are already paying.
