KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — The extended family of WMU’s legendary “Black Ghost” returned to campus yesterday, 100 years after he played football in a world that was much more racially polarized than the one we live in.
He was WMU’s first African American Athlete, the first that many teams saw in those days.
Sam Dunlap was a stand-out high school athlete from Benton Harbor who came to Kalamazoo and lettered in three sports, breaking WMU records that would stand for decades, and all the while dealing with the racism of his day.
Nephew Moses Easley that he was one heck of an athlete, perhaps the best of his time, but he was not afforded the opportunity that was available to others because of his color.
