PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – It’s an election year in the City of Portage and things have heated up early, generating a full ballot of candidates.
The community’s opposition to new housing projects near Austin Lake got things rolling this summer, when City Council member Lisa Brayton, who also opposes the developments, was encouraged to run against incumbent Mayor Patricia Randall.
Now Brayton’s use of an Austin Lake address on her filing documents has been challenged. The City Council will go into closed session Tuesday evening to hear their attorney’s advice for handling the challenge.
Resident Nancy Ketteman advised the council at their last meeting that the development issue is not going away.
Meanwhile Councilman Vic Ledbetter says the Citizens Task Force set up to share information on the controversial developments has broken down. He says they couldn’t agree on a process at their first and only meeting, and he accused the members of using stall tactics as a ploy.
Aside from the two candidates running for Mayor, there are nine candidates running for three openings on the City Council, with just two incumbents running for reelection.
