EAST LANSING, MI — A proposed hike covering room and board for incoming freshmen at Michigan State University calls for a sharp increase.
New students this fall could be seeing a room and board rate increase of 7% to reflect a big increase in food, energy and construction costs, according to a recommendation from the Student Life and Engagement Department at the East Lansing school. MSU blames runaway inflation for the increase.
The Board of Trustees is set to take a vote on the matter at its meeting on Friday, April 21. According to school officials, the proposal keeps MSU as one of the most affordable in the Big Ten and the seventh lowest of Michigan’s 15 public institutions.
