EMMETT TOWNSHIP (WKZO) — EmmettTownship firefighters were unable to save a notorious home from a suspicious fire that broke out early Saturday morning.
If it turns out to be arson, it would not be the first crime committed in the structure.
Arriving firefighters found the vacant home at 1015 S. Raymond Road fully engulfed in flames. The fire had been reported by a motorist who had been passing by and spotted the smoke at about 5 a.m.
19-years-ago next month, the body of 80-year-old Robert Rogers was found in the home. He had been bludgeoned to death.
Investigators were eventually able to pin the crime on Roger’s neighbor, Sharon Zachary, who had befriended him and had been helping with his finances as his eyesight failed.
Prosecutors claim that Rogers discovered that she had also been helping herself to his finances, embezzling money and was about to report her when he was killed.
They found over 100-thousand dollars in cash hidden around the home after he died. She is doing life for that crime.
Fire Marshals will run tests and search the rubble to see if they can find a cause for the fire.
