LANSING (WKZO) — Kids in Michigan are continuing to lose ground economically, mainly because their parents are not seeing any benefits from the recovery, have been forced to take lower paying jobs because of the new economy or losing assistance because of state budget cuts.
The bottom line measured by the annual Kids Count Survey finds the child poverty rate continues to worsen, Michigan has dropped a spot and now ranks 33rd for child well-being among all states.
Alicia Gavarra-Warren with the league for Public Policy says the numbers show improvements in child death rates, low birth weights and the number of children with healthcare. Improvements have been made in early childhood education, but it takes time for such improvements to result in a positive impact.
