KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Summer is winding down and Kalamazoo Public Schools will open fall term with a new slogan, a new theme song, and some unhappy employees.
The new tune debuted at a teachers workshop earlier this week.
Changing the words from Sister Sledge’s hit “We Are Family” to “We Are KPS”, the song was the soundtrack for a video that was played for the Board of Education meeting last night.
The board had the slogan thrown back at them by support personnel, including bus drivers, para-professionals, and other part-timers who say they can’t survive on what they are paid.
They were particularly unhappy that new-hires, who were offered incentive pay rates to get them to apply, are making more than experienced workers stuck in old union contracts.
The Board of Education held a closed door session to discuss labor negotiations after last night’s meeting.
