KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — A Kalamazoo teen has been bound over to be tried for the shooting death of a Kalamazoo Central High School student just two days into the new year.
Nasi Moshe Ben-Yaisrael, 18, is charged with open murder and gun felonies for killing Deshontae Ellis, 18, in the parking lot of the Red Roof Inn in Oshtemo. Ellis had just stopped to drop three girls off at a party being held in one of the rooms at the motel when a witness testified he got out of the car to try to break up a fight.
Investigators think Ellis was shot as he was about to get back into the vehicle.
On Thursday, Kalamazoo Public Schools officials commented on the deaths of Ellis and Temetrion Hegler, who was shot and killed days later during a home domestic disturbance.
Board President Patti Scholler-Barber said, just because their funerals have come and gone, they should not be forgotten and neither should the lesson about gun violence their deaths teach us.
