OSHTEMO (WKZO-AM) — New information suggests murder victim Deshontae Ellis, 18, was driving three teenage girls to a party at the Red Roof Inn in Oshtemo Township early Saturday when an argument between the girls began in his car.
Investigators think the suspect in the shooting, Nasi Ben-Yaisrael, 18, came out of the party and got involved in the verbal altercation somehow, which ended with Ellis getting shot to death.
Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard Fuller said the investigation remains ongoing.
“He was probably not a participant at the party, and he went there with some people that, I believe, needed a ride,” Fuller said.
Fuller said, for now, that’s all he is willing to say.
“We still have people we want to talk to,” Fuller said. “The good thing is, we do believe the right person is in jail at this point.”
He also said others may be charged, but that will be up to the prosecutor.
