KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Doctors say 14-year-old Abigail Kopf has been released from Bronson Children’s Hospital in Kalamazoo and has been transferred to a rehabilitation facility in Grand Rapids where she will continue her recovery.
She spent 17 days at Bronson and could be in rehab for up to six months to learn how to walk and talk again.
“The pace of her progress is exceptional,” Dr. Aaron Lane-Davies said. “It will be a long journey ahead, but she is regaining her functions more quickly than expected for someone with an extensive brain injury.”
The Harper Creek Middle School student was enjoying a night out with a group of older women when they were fired upon, allegedly by 45-year-old Jason Dalton, in the parking lot of a Cracker Barrel restaurant off 9th Street in Texas Township. Four were killed, and Kopf, despite initially being pronounced dead, was the only survivor.
Her parents, Gene and Vicki Kopf, said they appreciate the outpouring of support they have received from the community.
