KALMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — An overflow crowd filled the main sanctuary of the Galilee Baptist Church in Kalamazoo on Sunday for a benefit concert for Tiana Caruthers, the 25-year-old shot by a gunman in the first of three local shootings last month.
The late arrivals were shuttled to overflow areas where they watched the gospel benefit and fundraiser on big flat screen televisions.
More than $17,000 was raised at the event, which featured a number of performers and gospel groups and a videotaped appearance from Carruthers. Members of Carruthers’ family, including her young daughter, were there to thank the crowd and the community personally for their support.
Carruthers was shot four times, allegedly by 45-year-old Jason Dalton.
She continues a slow recovery at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo.
