KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Controversial cyclist Lance Armstrong plans to come to Kalamazoo and ride with other members of the Chain Gang, the bicycle club of the nine who were struck on North Westnedge Avenue last week, to complete their ride that was cut short after a pickup slammed into the group last Tuesday.
The group plans to depart from the Kalamazoo County Health and Community Services parking lot on the Nazareth Campus on Gull Road at around 6:30 p.m. and complete the 28.5-mile ride from Kalamazoo to Plainwell and back.
It will be held exactly a week after the nine set out for their weekly ride.
Armstrong said the incident, which left five dead and four hospitalized, was the worst he has seen. He told the Detroit News he’s had his own bad experiences biking on public roads, and says all bikers fear being struck by cars.
He has his own compelling life story as a professional cyclist. Armstrong overcame cancer to become a seven-time winner of the Tour de France and an inspiring international hero, only to be stripped of those championships and disgraced when it was revealed that he used performance enhancing drugs during his career.
