KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard Fuller says authorities are noticing a spike in counterfeit $20s being used at southwest Michigan businesses.
Fuller says two suspects from Chicago who were jailed last week after leading a 20-mile car chase down Interstate 94 were likely a part of the same counterfeiting ring.
“Our concerns are that there are a lot of players involved,” Fuller said.
The bills are being found at fast food restaurants and gas stations.
“Part of the trick they like to pull is buy a $2 item with a fake $20,” Fuller said. “They also like to go to places that are really busy.”
He said the fakes are convincing, but still flawed.
“They have the same serial numbers,” Fuller said. “They look really good, but the paper’s going to feel reall funny.”
Businesses fooled by the bills should contact local authorities. The non-emergency line at the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office is (269) 383-8821.
