LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Gretchen Whitmer talked about cooperation as she took the oath of office on Tuesday as Michigan’s 49th Governor.
The former state Senator said that what “truly makes Michigan special are the people who call it home … all Michiganders share some common traits that are part of the legacy we’ve inherited in the state we call home – grit, humility, dreaming up something new (and) building it with our own two hands.
“We may belong to different parties, but we are all here for the same reason. We are proud Michiganders, first and foremost, and we owe it to the people we serve to cast partisanship aside, to roll up our sleeves (and) to build bridges together … None of us can afford to compromise Michigan’s economic future because we won’t compromise with one another.”
Whitmer and Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist II, along with Attorney General Dana Nessel and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, headed up the list of elected office holders who were sworn in on the state Capitol steps in Lansing as Democrats took control of Michigan’s Executive Branch during the November 6th elections. However, Republicans are still in the majority in both the state Senate and state House, as well as on the Supreme Court.
