SPRING LAKE TOWNSHIP (WHTC-AM/FM) — An Ottawa County plow driver may face charges after a crash that sent Spring Lake resident Robin Smith, 47, to North Ottawa Community Hospital with serious injuries, according to police.
The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sgt. Jason Kik insident the plow driver, Terry Svoboda, 59, was southbound on 148th Avenue, just south of Cleveland Street in Spring Lake Township at about 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, 2019, when he tried to avoid a semi-tractor trailer that had either slowed or stopped. Snow had obscured its trailer lights, the plow driver told police, and when he saw them, he swerved into the northbound lanes to avoid crashing into the semi.
But that put the plow into the path of Smith, then northbound and at the wheel of a 2017 Jeep Wrangler.
The plow hit the Jeep’s driver side, sending the Jeep off the road and into bike path fencing.
Svoboda was uninjured. Kik’s report indicated that the Ottawa County Prosecutor’s Office has been asked to review the case and determine whether or not charges are appropriate.
