KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – After construction was approved in a 2022 bond issue, the Kalamazoo Public Schools is about to work on building the new El Sol School.
A community open house will be held Monday from 5:00-6:30 p.m. at the future site of El Sol at 1428 Baker Street.
School officials say this is an opportunity for anyone interested to see the location and renderings of the new building. The current school is located at 604 West Vine Street.
Students will remain in the current building until construction of the new building is completed.
The plan is to have the new school built in time for the 2028-29 school year. That year would only include K through 5 students. Sixth grade would be added the following year, with 7th and 8th grades progressively added each year after that. The magnet school aims to graduate students who are proficient in both English and Spanish.
The Kalamazoo Public Schools Board of Trustees last November approved preliminary designs for a new school that would give El Sol room to include middle schoolers.
The board previously voted to move the school from its current location in the city of Kalamazoo’s Vine neighborhood to a plot of district-owned land in Kalamazoo Township’s Eastwood neighborhood, but then reversed that decision by deciding to put is on Baker Street.
