BATTLE CREEK, MI (WNWN) – The owner of 17 dogs in Calhoun County’s Emmett Township is looking at animal cruelty charges after the dogs were found outside in the bitter cold Thursday night.
The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department says an animal control deputy was performing an animal welfare check when he found the dogs in the 10,000 block of I Drive N.
They say the dogs were found outside in the polar vortex weather with minimum shelter, frozen food and water. They were barking and seemed to be distressed.
The 65-year-old owner is suspected by authorities of breeding dogs for dog fighting.
The dogs were seized and taken to the Calhoun County Animal Shelter for examination by a veterinarian.
Additional charges may follow and the investigation is ongoing.
