WASHINGTON D.C. (WTVB) – Former Democratic Congressman John Dingell of Dearborn, who served in the U.S. House longer than anyone else in history, died Thursday at the age of 92. His death came a day after it was revealed he had been diagnosed with cancer and had entered hospice care.
Dingell served 59 years in Congress. His widow, Debbie Dingell, now serves in the U.S. House having won the seat he vacated with his retirement in the 2014 election. Dingell was a World War Two veteran elected to Congress to succeed his late father.
Michigan 7th District Republican Congressman Tim Walberg issued a statement after John Dingell’s passing.
He said, “I count it a privilege to have served with John Dingell in the House and to represent a part of his former district. He was a towering figure in this institution and left a mark that few can match. Throughout his lifetime of public service, John was a fierce advocate for the people of Michigan and was guided by a love of country. In this hour of mourning, may God provide comfort to Debbie and the entire Dingell family.”
