BATTLE CREEK,MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A Battle Creek firefighter is being treated for a minor back injury after fire crews were called to put out a fire in a home at 101 North Broad Street early Friday morning.
The fire started in the basement and rescue crews were immediately sent in after a neighbor said he thought he heard someone in the home.
They retreated after a phone call to the owner revealed that no one was there. The battle to control the flames was hampered by a live power line fallen near the home, extreme weather conditions and a weakened first floor that made an interior attack on the flames dangerous.
The firefighter was injured when he slipped and fell on some of the ice that had formed around the home.
The cause remains under investigation.
