ALLEGAN (WKZO AM/FM) — Allegan Police say a two hour stand-off with an armed carjacker ended when the suspect got cold.
It began Tuesday afternoon when the suspect hijacked a work van owned by a contractor from a Perrigo parking lot.
The suspect apparently crashed into a tree and fled into a wooded area off 108th Street near 24th Street in Trowbridge Township.
Authorities tracked him into the woods, eventually cornering him, and the 39-year-old man claimed to have a bomb.
They called the State Police Bomb Squad, but the man eventually got cold and surrendered and they learned the bomb was a bluff.
Allegan Police Chief Rick Hoyer says the Barry Couny man was already being sought for allegedly stealing a vehicle and driving it into a pond on Monday and he unsuccessfully tried to steal a tractor.
They say the carjacker was under the influence of Methamphetamine and was taken to Ascension Borgess in Kalamazoo for an evaluation before he was jailed.
The Prosecutor’s office is in the process of compiling a list of charges.
The suspect was apparently under court supervision and wearing a tether.
