UNDATED (WKZO AM/FM) — Love is in the air, and so are the scams especially as online, long-distance dating becomes more and more popular.
— ROMANCE SCAM —
The Better Business Bureau is warning people about a new romance scam where the victim believes they have a genuine online relationship with someone overseas, but then they start asking for favors, like getting packages sent to them that they can then pass along to the scammer.
This makes the person a so-called, “Money Mule” where they are used as a middleman for someone online who is committing a variety of illegal acts like shipping goods bought using a stolen credit card or transporting stolen money or drugs.
BBB’s Communications Manager Troy Baker says if the mystery lover starts asking for money or favors, report it to the police, the federal trade commission, or the BBB and do not take part in the process.
— VALENTINE’S DAY STUDY —
Just in time for Valentine’s Day, a researcher at Michigan State University says just about everything you may think about romance and relationships may be wrong.
Psychology Professor Bill Chopik says they did psychological profiles on 2,500 marriages that have lasted over 20-years to find the keys to happiness.
They found opposites may attract but they don’t last, but they also found dating apps that match people with similar likes, personalities and habits may also have it all wrong.
They found no benefit to compatibility in their survey to lasting happiness.
He says finding someone who is nice, thoughtful attentive and conscientious tended to result in enduring and satisfactory relationships.
He says partnering with neurotics and extroverts tended to be unsatisfactory.
— TOP CITIES TO CELEBRATE —
There’s one Michigan city you don’t want to spend Valentine’s Day at this year.
Wallethub released their study on the 100 best places to celebrate the special day based on 25 key metrics like the cheapest three-course meals for two, most jewelry, florist and chocolate shops, and the best Valentine’s Day forecast.
Topping the list was San Francisco California, followed by New York New York, and Las Vegas Nevada.
Unfortunately ranked number 99 on the list, was Detroit which had some of the most expensive three-course meals, fewest jewelry stores, and highest average price for a Valentine’s Day Party.
