BATTLE CREEK (WKZO NEWS) — It’s safe to use the tap water in Battle Creek, but some may still be avoiding it until the brown color goes away. That’s mostly inert sediments kicked up by the pressure changes the system has gone through.
Utility Director Perry Hart says homeowners can flush their systems by turning on all the cold water faucets and letting them run until the water is clear.
Let everything settle for about 30 minutes, then drain a gallon of water from the bottom of your water heater.
He says rusty water can discolor your clothes, so you will want to make sure the water in the washer is clear first.
A full investigation is planned into the incident that caused the city wide boil water advisory. Somehow an experienced work crew managed to drill into a 30-inch water main that is clearly marked on maps.
