HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Holland Department of Public Safety has released a video recounting the dramatic house fire rescue that saved Holland resident Maria Gonzales and her granddaughter Mya on Jan. 11, 2019.
Terry Joldersma and Tony Garza happened to be nearby the home, at 136 W. 19th St. in Holland, and rescued the two. Garza broke a window to get to them, and suffered minor injuries.
The home’s smoke detectors were not working, according to Holland fire officials who are reminding people to have an escape plan, practice it, and install smoke detectors in bedrooms, testing them on a regular basis.
Gonzales is recovering from burns on her right arm and fingers, and the baby is OK.
Garza and Joldersma were honored at this week’s Holland City Council meeting for their life-saving efforts.
