LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) – Lawmakers are considering whether to make an optional fee for state parks access the default option when Michigan drivers complete their vehicle registration, a move supporters say would provide a needed boost of funding for the state’s natural attractions.
Under the bill, those who don’t want the pass would have to waive the fee instead.
33 percent of Michigan drivers currently opt in to the recreation passport program. If that could be increased to 50 percent by having residents opt out instead of having to opt in, revenue from the fee would increase to $44 million.
