UNDATED, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Although the Trump administration has proposed cutting funding for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, the EPA has announced a five-year plan for the program.
According to officials, the Trump Administration will provide full funding of the program. The funding provided will be used to clean up contaminants in the water, protect wildlife, and help protect against various invasive species.
However, some officials, such as Senator Gary Peters, feel that the funding provided will not be sufficient enough.
As a result, Peters has introduced an amendment for consideration that would raise the funding from $300 million to $320 million.
“I’ve seen firsthand just how crucial the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative is in communities across Michigan,” Peters said in a press release. “The Great Lakes are more than an ecological treasure or economic engine: they are simply part of who we are as Michiganders. We need to do everything we can to protect the Great Lakes for future generations, and this amendment reflects the importance of that mission.”
The press release notes that since its inception in 2010, the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative has provided more than $762 million for 880 projects across Michigan.
