UNDATED, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Better Business Bureau of Western Michigan is providing citizens some updates and tips in regards to robocall scams.
Better Business Bureau of Western Michigan CEO Phil Catlett says that automated calls are only legal when they are pre-authorized.
“A lot of these calls are illegal,” Catlett said. “If someone is trying to sell you something without you giving them permission to use this automated kind of service, that’s illegal. The only folks that are supposed to call you using a robocall device is someone that you’ve given permission to do that, like maybe your doctor’s office with an appointment.”
The Better Business Bureau is now partnering with the Attorney General’s office as part of an ongoing effort to crack down on these robocalls.
“A lot of this is just informative,” Catlett said. “A lot can prevent trouble if consumers are informed to just handle those calls wisely. Many of the losses will be eliminated.”
Current reports of robocalls have clocked in at 1.3 billion in Michigan this year alone.
