UNDATED, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Michigan is helping citizens with Lake Michigan homes stem beach erosion by using sandbags.
Currently, the Great Lakes are at the highest levels that they’ve been since 1986. Additional storms have caused erosion to speed up, causing concern for damage of lakeshore homes.
The Department of Environment, Great Lakes & Energy is helping citizens by creating a permit to set up temporary sandbags. The project allows faster permit processing and a fee reduced to only $100.
Public notice is not necessary in order to set up the sandbags.
Although the department is helping with the sandbag project, officials note that this is not a long-term solution and homeowners should look at options to prevent erosion in the future. Officials recommend that stronger barriers be built with expert contractors.
Concerned homeowners can apply for a sandbag permit through the department website at https://miwaters.deq.state.mi.us/miwaters/external/home.
