UNDATED, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A lawsuit meant to block the new Michigan Redistricting Commission will not be upheld in court, according to a new ruling.
Michigan citizens had already voted in favor of the redistricting commission last year. It is meant to redesign the Michigan congressional districts instead of the Legislature to avoid gerrymandering.
Grand Rapids Federal Judge Janet Neff found that there was nothing illegal about the new commission or its provisions in a case decision Monday.
As a result, 250,000 applications will be mailed out to Michigan citizens to help build the new commission board. Candidates will all be selected at random to fill positions of four Democrats, four Republicans and five unaffiliated voters.
The random selections will be made by Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson.
