UNDATED (WHTC-AM/FM) — After a failed Laketown millage ballot for municipal broadband internet service to Laketown Township, a group of residents decided to convince Comcast to do expand its services..
Michelle Gilbert, Comcast’s vice president of public relations for the Heartland Region, says the company gets similar requests all the time.
“It’s a real delicate balance, between investing capitol into our existing network to increase capacity and increase the technology, and then building out to new areas,” said Gilbert.
The effort by Laketown Twp. residents worked, she said, in part because some Saugatuck residents were making a similar request — and the idea made good business sense.
She says some residents could order service in about four months. Crews are in the area now, she said, and the project will be done in phases, with the goal of having it completed by 2019. She swas unable to state the definitive borders for service, she said, because some details haven’t yet been nailed down.
“We are grateful that Comcast was a willing respondent to our search for a broadband provider. We are confident that this will bring the broadband solutions needed for homes and businesses in the 21st century.” said Gerry Wyse, one of the Laketown Twp. residents who made the appeal to the company. Wyse send out an announcement of the new service.
