LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A Michigan House Committee heard testimony Thursday on an Indiana woman’s design for “Safe Haven Baby Boxes” which would supplement Michigan’s Safe Haven law.
The provision would allow women who don’t feel capable of raising a newborn to drop the baby off at a hospital, police station or fire station with no questions asked.
The devices, which work something like a large bank deposit box, would allow them to do it without having to suffer any shame from others.
Monica Kelsey says her boxes are now allowed in Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.
The committee is also considering a bill that would expand the time a mother can surrender her baby from 72 hours to 30 days, which is more in line with other states.
