LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The head of the Michigan Department of Education, Superintendent Brian Whiston, has lost his battle with cancer.
Whiston began his long-term disability leave last Friday to concentrate on his medical care and spend time with family.
He passed away Monday night at the age of 56.
Governor Snyder released a statement saying Whiston “…was an outstanding partner who understood that, just as teachers work every day to challenge their students to do better, we all need to challenge ourselves to do better for students.”
Whiston previously served as superintendent of Dearborn Public Schools, spent 11 years as director of government and community services for the Oakland County Intermediate School District, and was appointed state superintendent in 2015.
