LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) — The State Health Department says they now have four confirmed cases of AFM, that rare polio-like affliction that mainly affects children, leaving them partially paralyzed. One of them is in West Michigan.
The CDC has confirmed the new cases of Acute Flaccid Myelitis are in Ottawa and Macomb County.
The two others are in Oakland and Wayne County
Spokesperson Lynn Sutfin says they only have a general idea that it’s linked to viral illnesses so good hygiene may help avoid getting AFM.
The onset of the four cases actually took place back in August through October and took until mid- December to confirm them.
Samples from five other Michigan cases are awaiting tests in Atlanta.
The CDC had confirmed 165 cases of AFM in 36 states, mostly in children.
