KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo’s new State Senator-elect has now been sworn into office in front of friends, family members and supporters at Kalamazoo City Hall.
Former City Commissioner and State House Rep. Sean McCann took the oath from Judge Alexander Lipsey.
McCann thanked his staff for their efforts, his family for their patience, his supporters for their votes and his opponent, Senator Margaret O’Brien for a smooth transition, especially when it comes to bridging efforts for specific constituents.
On hand for the event was former State House Rep. Mary Brown who noted that Republicans will still hold the Majority in the Senate, and McCann will still need support.
Mayor Bobby Hopewell noted that McCann fell just 61 votes short the first time he ran for this office. He says it gave him a target that he overshot by 12,000 votes.
It was standing room only at City Hall for the event.
