BURLINGTON, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A Calhoun County woman will spend Christmas in the county jail after deputies say she crashed her pick-up into home in Burlington on Christmas Eve, and then allegedly lied about it to investigators.
The 22-year-old veered off East Leroy Drive just before 7:00 p.m. Monday and struck the front of the home. The impact reportedly knocked one of the occupants out of bed.
The driver then allegedly fled the scene, but later told police she circled around and returned to the scene before police arrived.
When police arrived, the woman and a male passenger allegedly told the first officers to arrive that the driver had fled the crash site. A perimeter was set up and a K-9 deployed.
Police say she later told the truth. She is being held on an outstanding warrant while they sort out possible additional charges.
The driver may have initially fled because deputies say they say she was driving on a suspended license.
Considering the extent of the damage to the home and the vehicle, they say it may be a Christmas miracle that no one was injured.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation but it appears that alcohol and drugs were not an issue.
