PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A celebration ceremony was held in Portage Thursday to mark a milestone in the construction of a new community senior center.
Earlier in the day, city officials, major donors, partner agency associates, and others signed the final beam for the Charles & Lynn Zhang Portage Community Senior Center before it was placed on top of the structure. Construction of the $12.5 million facility began in December 2020.
The campaign received broad support from local foundations, area businesses, and community donors. The Portage City Council has pledged to fund the remaining balance of the construction costs.
“This project would not have gotten off the ground without the Engage Empower Enrich Campaign Committee and its co-chairs, Sarah Baker and Jim Stephanak,” said City Manager Joe La Margo. “I also extend my appreciation to all of the donors to the Engage Empower Enrich Campaign, and especially to Charles & Lynn Zhang for their incredibly generous gift,” he said.
The building is scheduled to be complete in February 2022. The new Portage Community Senior Center will feature a multipurpose room with a capacity to seat 330 people.
