LANSING (WKZO-AM) — A pair of Democratic state lawmakers have introduced matching bills in the House and Senate that would be aimed at the problem of sexual assaults on college campuses.
Currently, the law reads “no means no,” but Sen. Curtis Hertel and Rep. Tom Cochran say the language should be revised to “yes means yes.” Both believe a drunken nod or no response is not permission, and that permission can be rescinded at any time.
The bills would also require that high school sex education courses be altered to make it clear that only the stated and clear consent of both parties means it’s OK to engage in sexual activity.
They say “no” will still work too, but they say their approach will clarify the matter if it gets to the point where allegations and charges have to be made.
