MUSKEGON HEIGHTS (WKZO-AM) — Two basketball teams from two cities stunned by gun violence met in Muskegon Heights on Wednesday in what they called a “unity game.”
Six were killed in Kalamazoo on Feb. 20. Earlier that month, a shooting took place outside the Muskegon Heights gym.
Muskegon Heights students were heartbroken when Shelby High School canceled their last game of the season, which was supposed to take place on senior night. Officials at Shelby cited security concerns.
A team that wasn’t on anyone’s radar, Kalamazoo’s Lakeside Academy, offered to fill in. The senior night festivities were back on.
The stands were filled with fans who were there to make a statement against gun violence.
“We want to support this community,” one fan said.
“We have to support our community and our kids,” another fan said.
There were no major security issues, perhaps because of the large police presence at the gym.
Muskegon Heights won 76-27.
