KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A teen involved in a weekend shooting on Kalamazoo’s eastside is now facing multiple charges.
18-year-old JoJuan Isiah Smith has been charged for assaulting an officer, assault with a dangerous weapon, malicious destruction of property, and carrying a concealed weapon. Court records show he is also facing two pending felony firearm charges.
Smith was arrested after shooting into a vehicle and then fleeing from officers on Sunday, April 26th.
Kalamazoo Public Safety officers responded to the scene around 11:20 a.m. following reports that a suspect had tried to shoot at someone inside a car. Authorities surveyed the location for evidence and were able to get a witness description of a man firing into the vehicle and then leaving the location.
Once the suspect was located, he fled on foot into a residence at the 1100th block of Bridge Street, east of Riverview Drive.
Smith then moments later exited the building and was taken into custody, with officers finding a firearm believed to be used in the shooting and suspected cocaine inside the home. He was later taken to the Kalamazoo County Jail on numerous charges.
Smith was 17-years-old at the time of the shooting but has since turned 18.
He was arraigned by video conference on Monday, April 27th from the county jail in front of Kalamazoo County District Judge Christopher Haenicke, with his next court appearance scheduled on June 10th for a preliminary examination.
