PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — After receiving public backlash on social media over a decision to reopen this week, the Airway Fun Center in Portage has decided to remain closed for the time being.
Originally, the activity center, which hosts attractions like go-karts and mini-golf, was planning on reopening their doors on Tuesday.
Officials said that negative feedback from the public on social media over a period of twelve hours prompted them to change their minds.
A Facebook post by the business claimed that they had permission from local authorities to reopen, but Portage Police Chief Nicholas Armold said that he had told them they would be in violation of Governor Whitmer’s “Stay Home, Stay Safe” order.
Officials with the business also said that they thought it would be okay to reopen since golf courses have been allowed to reopen their doors. However, the Kalamazoo County Health Department said that a business like the Fun Center carries more of an exposure risk.
The Office of the Attorney General also weighed in, stating that their business could not lawfully open at this time.
Officials now say that the Airway Fun Center will remain closed until the Stay Home order is lifted. When that happens, the business will take extra sanitary measures to protect patrons.
