KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Leaf pick-up in the City of Kalamazoo begins today, but in reverse of previous years.
City officials say crews begin the leaf pickup on the east side of the city, moving west. Last year was in the opposite direction.
Public Services Director James Baker says the change is meant to reduce the likelihood the same households would be hit with weather-related leaf problems for a second year in a row. Heavy snow in November last year meant crews had to switch from leaf pick-up to snow removal before all the leaves were collected.
By the time they were able to get the rest of the leaves in January and February, they were a muddy mess on the east side of the city.
Over 20,000 cubic yards of material were picked up during the fall 2025 and spring 2026 collection. That was up from the two previous seasons.
This year crews will move from Zone A to Zone b and then to Zone C to remove leaves.
