EAST LANSING, MI — Another Michigan State University trustee filed a federal lawsuit to challenge the school board’s code of ethics, which was recently altered in order to stifle criticism.
According to a release, after Michael Balow called out MSU for withholding documents related to the Larry Nassar scandal and an investment in MSU athletics, the board revised the code to restrict trustees from publicly criticizing university governance. When Balow refused to sign the code, the board imposed severe punishments that are preventing him from carrying out his duties.
The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE), which is representing Balow, filed the lawsuit Wednesday in the US District Court for the Western District of Michigan.

Michigan State University Trustee Rema Vassar filed a lawsuit last week against several members of the university, including President Kevin Guskiewicz. Vassar claims university officials “orchestrated a campaign of intentional discrimination and retaliation against her,” according to the 40-page document.
